Three Senate Commerce Committee members introduced legislation that would force companies to notify customers of a data breach within 30 days of discovery and carry a five-year prison sentence for knowingly concealing a data breach, CyberScoop reports. Senator Bill Nelson, D-Fla., is calling the Data Security and Breach Notification Act “commonsense” legislation, adding, “Congress can either take action now to pass this long overdue bill or continue to kowtow to special interests who stand in the way. … When it comes to doing what’s best for consumers, the choice is clear.”
