The EU General Data Protection Regulation has already had profound effects on organizations around the world, a trend of restructuring data protection compliance management that will continue through next year's implementation date. However, the regulation will have effects on industries that go beyond compliance efforts. For example, Alex Gleusteen, CIPP/E, a freelance privacy and compliance officer, argues that the data subject access request provision under Article 15 of the GDPR could actually help lower insurance costs. In this post for Privacy Perspectives, Gleusteen explains why there "is a realistic opportunity here for insurers and data subjects to make mutual beneficial agreements about the way medical information is exchanged, without the dependence and costs of the treating physician."
