M15 Director-General Andrew Parker has said the UK intelligence agency’s ability to spy on communications data is no different than “the work spies have been doing for a hundred years,” Financial Times reports. Parker said the so-called “snoopers’ charter” is crucial to protect citizens as the number of threats against the UK is as high as he’s seen in his 32-year career. “We need to be able to do what we have always done through our history,” he said. “To find and stop the people who threaten the UK, we need to be able to monitor the communications of terrorists and spies and others who threaten the country.” Meanwhile, Tech Crunch reports on a new legal challenge to surveillance programs filed by Human Rights Watch.
