The family of a man held in a “padded cell” was refused details about the circumstances leading up to the decision due to privacy constraints set in place by the EU General Data Protection Regulation, The Irish Times reports. A lawyer for the prisoner argued the prison’s interpretation of the GDPR is a misinterpretation, adding, “a family member and a prisoner’s solicitor are absolutely entitled to information concerning a prisoner’s personal welfare.” As the case is before the courts, the Irish Prison Service provided no comment.
