The Hill reports a number of lobbying firms in Washington, DC, “are scrambling to lock down their networks against” cyberattacks by hacking groups and foreign governments. Some lobbying firms are even encrypting their emails and committing to annual security audits for protection. American Bar Association Cybersecurity Legal Taskforce Cochairman Harvey Rishikof said, “If your emails are hacked, there is a risk of embarrassment. For a lobbying firm, that risk is acute.” Meanwhile, officials say a recent cyberattack on the White House may have been perpetrated by hackers working for the Russian government. According to the White House, the breach only affected an “unclassified system,” but that information was sensitive as it involved details of the president’s real-time daily schedule.
