The Singapore government has begun collecting iris scans for citizens and permanent residents as part of its registration process, ZDNet reports. Amendments to the National Registration Act legalized the move, and according to the Ministry of Home Affairs, "was part of efforts to improve the 'effectiveness and efficiency' of operations undertaken by the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority," the report states. ""The collection and verification of iris images is similar to taking a photograph," said Senior Minister of State for Home Affairs Desmond Lee. "It is convenient, contactless and non-intrusive and can be completed in seconds."
