The UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has fined the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) 200,000 GBPs for not ensuring adequate data security of laptops containing sensitive law enforcement interviews with victims and witnesses, ABC News reports. According to the ICO, the laptops were stolen from a Manchester-based film company charged with editing the 31 investigations for court proceedings, one of which included data “related to historical allegations against a high-profile individual.” The laptops were password protected, but the data in question was not encrypted. The CPS “did not take into account the substantial distress that would be caused if the videos were lost,” the ICO stated. Meanwhile, Ireland’s data protection commissioner has requested that Eircom pay 35,000 euros to charity for allegedly texting and calling customers who had opted out of receiving them.
