The Federal Trade Commission has received a complaint from 20 advocacy groups asking the agency to investigate YouTube for possible violations of the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act, CNN reports. The groups are accusing YouTube of illegally collecting the information of 23 million children over “a period of years” and wants the FTC to fine the company $41,484 per violation. The FTC said it will review the complaint, and if the agency finds YouTube has violated COPPA, the tech company may be forced to add an age gate. Denise Tayloe, CEO of COPPA consulting firm Privo, said the EU General Data Protection Regulation may be tied to the timing of the advocacy groups’ complaint.
