European Union regulators have increased their focus on the digital advertising industry, The Wall Street Journal reports. The crux of their investigations is whether advertising technology companies have violated the EU General Data Protection Regulation. The U.K. Information Commissioner’s Office released a report earlier this year in which it put the adtech industry on notice. France’s data protection authority, the CNIL, and the Irish Data Protection Commission have committed to investigations into the industry’s practices. One area of concern for regulators is real-time bidding, particularly when it is done by smaller companies that may not have the resources to properly protect the data they collect.
