In a letter to U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson, eight Democratic lawmakers inquire about the use of facial-recognition technology in federally assisted housing, BuzzFeed News reports. Noting concerns about the technology, including its “false and biased judgments,” the lawmakers requested the number of public housing properties that have used facial recognition in the last five years, amount of federal money put toward its purchase and whether HUD has policies regulating its use. People “should not have to compromise their civil rights and liberties nor accept the condition of indiscriminate, sweeping government surveillance to find an affordable place to live,” the letter reads.
