Draft Report on New EU Data Protection Regulation - Strict Requirements Proposed

On January 8, 2013, a draft report on the proposed EU Data Protection Regulation was issued by the rapporteur of the lead committee in the European Parliament. Included within are new amendments that strengthen the rights of individuals and supervisory authorities and reinforce existing—or impose additional—obligations on companies such as revisions to “legitimate business interest” as legal basis for processing EU data; extended scope of application to include free services; changes in international data transfer rules, and additional obligations on data controllers.
