About the IAPP

Dr. Simon Assion, CIPP/E, is a Senior Associate at Bird & Bird in Frankfurt, Germany. As an information and communications law specialist, he advises regularly in situations where innovative products face regulatory issues, in areas such as the information security, IoT, big data, information security or the regulation of OTT services. He is proficient in designing contracts and experienced both as a negotiator and a litigator. His expertise includes the management and remediation of data breaches, and legal procedures before the data protection authorities or the telecommunication regulator.

Simon has been named as a "name of the next generation" by Legal 500 2019, and one of Germany´s most renowned data protection lawyers by Wirtschaftswoche 2019. He is a member of the German Bar Association’s Committee for Information Law and 'staff author' of the journal 'Privacy in Germany' (PinG). He is also one of the founders of the think tank “Telemedicus”, which hosts a German-language weblog and an annual conference in Berlin. He regularly speaks at conferences or universities as a guest lecturer.

Before joining Bird & Bird, Simon was an in-house counsel at the public broadcaster MDR, where he managed legal projects relating to telecommunications regulation, competition law and IP law.

Besides his certification as a CIPP/E, Simon also holds a Dr. jur. (JD equivalent) and a certificate in “Information-, Telecommunications- and Media Law” by the University of Münster.
