Former EDPS Peter Hustinx Joins International Association of Privacy Professionals Board of Directors

Portsmouth, NH – 22 January 2015 – Today the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP) welcomed former European data protection supervisor (EDPS) Peter Hustinx to its board of directors.

Peter Hustinx was appointed the first EDPS in 2004 and reappointed by the European Parliament and the Council in January 2009 for a second term of five years. He remained in office until December 2014.

Hustinx has helped shape national and international privacy law for nearly 40 years in roles such as president of the Dutch Data Protection Authority and Chairman of the Article 29 Data Protection Working Party. He was involved in creating the Council of Europe’s “Convention for the Protection of Individuals with regard to Automatic Processing of Personal Data” in 1981 and “Directive 95/46/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council on the protection of individuals with regard to the processing of personal data and on the free movement of such data.”

Hustinx said: "I am delighted to join the IAPP board of directors at a time when the need for more effective protection of our privacy and personal data has never been greater. Helping to ensure that privacy professionals can play their crucial role in providing such protection is a strategic task which attracts and inspires me."

The IAPP also announced that it will be opening a Brussels office in 2015 to help support and expand its European operations. A new managing director for IAPP Europe is expected to be appointed in March.

“I’m delighted to welcome Peter Hustinx to our board of directors,” said IAPP President & CEO J. Trevor Hughes, CIPP. “His work as European data protection supervisor and his long tenure in the field have set the tone for global privacy regulation across sectors and organisations. With the new European data protection regulation expected to be finalized this year, the experience and strategic vision that Peter brings to the IAPP is invaluable as we continue our efforts to support data protection professionals in managing the challenges they face.”

Hustinx is joined by former chief privacy officer of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and chair of Jenner & Block’s Privacy and Information Governance Practice Mary Ellen Callahan, CIPP/US, and Peter Lefkowitz, CIPP/US, chief privacy officer, General Electric, who also begin board terms in 2015.
