Lauren Steinfeld serves as Chief Privacy Officer for Penn Medicine and Assistant Vice President for Audit, Compliance and Privacy. In this position, Steinfeld leads and oversees the HIPAA compliance program and other privacy initiatives for Penn’s six hospitals, over 250 physician practices, and the School of Medicine research program. In addition, Ms. Steinfeld teaches Privacy Law at Penn Law with Professor Christopher Yoo. Steinfeld has also co-taught a Coursera online Specialization in Regulatory Compliance, which has over 13,000 learners. She previously served as Chief Privacy Officer for the University of Pennsylvania.



Prior to joining Penn, Ms. Steinfeld worked at the Office of Management and Budget as the Associate Chief Counselor for Privacy. In this role in the Clinton Administration, she worked closely on drafting the HIPAA privacy rules as well on governmental data sharing, financial privacy and ECPA privacy matters. She had also served as Attorney Advisor to Federal Trade Commissioner Mozelle Thompson.
