Rocco Panetta



Rocco Panetta is an Italian lawyer, previously head of legal at Garante.

He is a former founding and managing partner of Panetta & Associati Studio Legale, a law boutique then merged in 2014 into NCTM.

Rocco Panetta has been a top-level officer at the Garante, the Italian Data Protection Authority heading the legal department supervising and dealing with, inter alia, marketing activities, simplification procedures, public licensed operators and international data transfers. While at the Privacy Authority he has been Italy’s representative at the European Commission within the activities of Art. 29 WP, involved in subgroups on BCR, SCC, SH, APIS/PNR, IMI.

Rocco has served both as Secretary General of the Italian Commission on Environmental Impact Assessment (Commissione VIA) and as a Commissioner of the same (for 4 years).

He has authored and edited more than 150 publications, including books, articles and collections. Editor of the column “Beyond Internet” for Cor.Com.

Rocco is currently a member of the IAPP Board of Directors; the Steering Committee of IIP (Istituto Italiano Privacy); the IEL (Institute of Energy Law); the Center of American and International Law; the IBA (International Bar Association); and he is the Secretary General of the ICF (Italian Compliance Forum).
As a lawyer, Rocco Panetta is ranked amongst leaders by Chambers Europe, the Legal500, TopLegal, Who's Who Legal. In 2015 Rocco has been awarded as The Best Privacy Lawyer of the Year at the TMT Legalcommunity Awards.
