International Association of Privacy Professionals, NTUC’s Employment and Employability Institute and Straits Interactive Launch the Certified Information Privacy Manager (CIPM) Training in Singapore
Local Data Protection Officers get fast track competency boost in data protection
November 17, 2014 – The International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP), together with National Trades Union Congress’ (NTUC) Employment and Employability Institute (e2i) and Straits Interactive, today announced the launch of the Certified Information Privacy Manager (CIPM) training in Singapore.
The objective of the certification is to boost the competency of local Data Protection Officers (DPOs) and provide a competency benchmark for the employment of DPOs based on international standards. According to the Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA), all organisations must designate at least one person to develop the organisation’s personal data policies and oversee the organisation's compliance with the PDPA.
Said Mr. J. Trevor Hughes, CIPP, IAPP President and CEO, "We are proud to introduce the CIPM certification, the world’s first and only certification in privacy programme management, to Singapore. The CIPM is the global answer for privacy professionals who are responsible for managing governance and operations within their organisation and aptly complements Singapore's recent Personal Data Protection Act, where there is need for data protection officers to understand how to operationalise data protection and privacy in their organisations."
The CIPM credential complements the IAPP’s first certification program—the Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP)—which covers data protection laws and regulations, or the “what” of privacy.
"The Personal Data Protection Commission welcomes the efforts of industry associations, such as the International Association of Privacy Professionals, to help build capabilities of organisations in the area of personal data protection for better compliance with the PDPA. This will also help to strengthen Singapore as a trusted global data hub and foster a competitive economy,” said Mr. Leong Keng Thai, Chairman, Personal Data Protection Commission.
The CIPM certification is targeted at data protection officers, corporate or regional privacy managers, compliance officers, risk managers, information security and auditing professionals and those with responsibility for implementing privacy policy within the organisations. The 3-day training programme will be stretched over two weeks and conducted by Straits Interactive, an IAPP corporate member and a PDPA specialist. Participants who are Singapore citizens or permanent residents can apply for pilot funding support from e2i on course fees capped at $360 per pax. The $3,500 course fees also covers the text book materials and exam fees.
“e2i and Straits Interactive piloted the Data Protection Officer course before the PDPA came into full effect in July 2014. Feedback from trainees was positive and many find the course useful. Employers also shared on the need to equip more PMEs to fill the skills gaps in data protection. As such, e2i is partnering IAPP and Straits Interactive to bring in international certification, contextualise the course content to be aligned with Singapore’s legislation, and to build a pool of Singaporean professionals who can manage, review and respond effectively on data protection issues for day-to-day business operations. As data protection needs grow, workers with these competencies will be sought after and able to value add to companies, “ said Mr Gilbert Tan, Chief Executive Officer of e2i.
