Mercedes Castells is Partner at FISCHER Abogados, and head of the firm´s Privacy & Data Protection practice. She is an attorney at law, and patent and trademark attorney. She graduated from the School of Law of the University of the Republic of Uruguay, and was admitted to the Uruguayan Bar in 1987. Post-graduate course on Corporate Law, Institute for Business Studies of Montevideo (IEEM). Diploma on Intellectual Property Studies, Postgraduate Center of the Faculty of Law, of the University of Uruguay, 2001.



Mercedes specializes in privacy and data protection, intellectual property, media and filmmaking, copyrights and TMT (technology, media and telecommunications).



She is a member of the International Association of Privacy Professionals, as well as numerous international organizations. Mercedes Castells is serving as secretary of the Copyright Committee of the Interamerican Intellectual Property Association for the period 2015-2018. She is also a member of the Intellectual Property Committee of the Uruguayan Bar Association.



She has in-depth knowledge and understanding of all aspects of IP and data protection, and advises international and national clients on privacy and data protection, and on acquiring, maintaining, enforcing and managing IP and technology assets.

 

Mercedes has been involved in numerous IP and TMT projects, including providing advice to clients in the software, filmmaking, music and technology industries.  



Her practice also focuses on litigation, and she has been lead counsel in taking to court copyright, unfair competition, software, domain names, trademark, and industrial design infringement cases. She has provided counsel in protection and enforcement, including structuring and implementing education and legalization programs.



She has been recognized by Chambers and Partners, Leaders League, and Managing Intellectual Property.
