Ms. Hitomi Iwase is a partner at Nishimura & Asahi specializing in the areas of intellectual property (IP) and information technology (IT). She handles patent, copyright, trademark, trade secret and other IP-related disputes and transactions as well as data privacy and cybersecurity related matters. In the area of data privacy, she has extensive experience in advising global companies on issues involving various aspects of Japanese data privacy laws, and she has also advised many Japanese companies on compliance with global data privacy laws. In the data privacy area, her expertise encompasses advising on establishment of general compliance systems, strategic advice related to data-related businesses, and advising on responses to data breaches and other incidents (including communication with regulators and affected data subjects). She also advises on data privacy and other legal issues related to the latest technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT). Ms. Iwase received an LL.B. from Waseda University and an LL.M. in Law, Science & Technology from Stanford Law School and is admitted in Japan (1997) and in New York (2004).
