Rachael Annear
Rachael is a partner in Freshfields' Data, Tech and Cyber Practice dedicated to helping organisations translate the evolving online safety and privacy regulatory landscape into workable solutions. She specializes in online safety, data protection and AI, with a particular focus on the application of new laws like the UK Online Safety Act. Rachael advises on the interplay between digital regulations, including online safety, privacy and financial services, across all stages of the business cycle.
She has extensive experience advising a wide range of organisations on data protection matters and complex global data strategies, against the demands of the shifting global legal and regulatory landscape. Her work spans a wide range of activities, including advising on international data-driven M&A, strategic advice, data crises, regulatory investigations and litigation. She is valued for her versatility in being able to apply her knowledge of data protection law to a wide range of issues, from drafting legislation and identifying key business risks during product development or strategic acquisitions, to navigating novel regulatory questions in investigations.
Rachael has helped numerous organisations, particularly in the financial services, retail and tech sectors, navigate complex regulatory challenges, enabling them to build trust with users whilst achieving their business objectives. She brings a deep understanding of these regulations rooted in extensive experience. This broad perspective allows her to provide clients with comprehensive and strategic advice on online safety and privacy, from the initial design phase through to managing potential disputes.
Rachael is the winner of the 2023 Picasso Privacy Award– Privacy Leader (Legal) and is a regular speaker on data and AI at events including Female Talent for Tech, City and Financial’s AI Regulation Summit and the Privacy Laws and Business annual conference.
