David Patariu, CIPP/E, CIPP/US, CIPM, FIP, PLS
David Patariu is a Privacy Law Specialist (PLS) attorney and IAPP Fellow of Information Privacy (FIP). He is the legal representative for the Mitigating Unauthorized Scraping Alliance (MUSA) and is a Senior Associate in the Technology and Innovation Group at Venable LLP. His law practice focuses on helping technology companies navigate the changing privacy, artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity regulatory landscape. David has also worked in-house at Yahoo, Instacart, and Verizon Media—on governance, ad tech, search, AI, and international compliance matters.
David has earned graduate degrees in computer science and informatics from Cornell University and Stanford Medical School, and a graduate certificate in International Security from the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies at Stanford University. David has also attained the Information Privacy Manager (CIPM), Information Privacy Professional United States (CIPP/US), and Information Privacy Professional Europe (CIPP/E) credentials awarded by the IAPP; and the Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) and Certified Cloud Security Professional (CCSP) credentials awarded by ISC2.
Notably, David successfully led the regulatory response to one of the largest fines in 2018 under the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). He was instrumental in conceptualizing and deploying the first AI classifier to differentiate child-directed publishers from general audience publishers for COPPA compliance. Additionally, David led one of the inaugural deployments of Privacy, AI, and Security Controls at a Fortune 100 company, using NIST SP 800-53 Rev. 4 and NOREA's Privacy Control Framework.
