About the IAPP

Thomas Petri has been the Bavarian State Commissioner for Data Protection, elected by the Bavarian State Parliament, since July 1, 2009. Professor Petri was re-elected on June 10, 2015 and May 20, 2021.

After completing his doctorate of law, Thomas Petri moved to the Supervisory Authority Schleswig-Holstein in the summer of 2000. There, as head of unit, he was responsible for the supervision of the private sector. From 2004 to 2006, he was seconded to the Federal Constitutional Court, where he worked as a research assistant in the First Senate. He then took over as head of the Legal Department at the Berlin Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information; at the same time, he was deputy commissioner in this department. Since July 1, 2009, Thomas Petri has been the Bavarian State Commissioner for Data Protection. The State Commissioner is elected by the Bavarian State Parliament on the recommendation of the Bavarian State Government. He is appointed by the President of the State Parliament. The term of office is six years; he can be re-elected. The re-election of Thomas Petri took place on June 10, 2015. 

On June 25, 2021, Prof. Dr. Thomas Petri was elected by the Bundesrat for a term of five years as deputy of the common representative in the European Data Protection Board. Since March 30, 2016, he has been an honorary professor at the University of Applied Sciences in Munich. Thomas Petri is an advisor and scientific co-editor in various legal journals with data protection law relevance.

Thomas Petri ist seit dem 01. Juli 2009 der vom Bayerischen Landtag gewählte Bayerische Landesbeauftragte für den Datenschutz. Thomas Petri wurde am 10. Juni 2015 und am 20. Mai 2021 wiedergewählt.

Nach Abschluss seiner Promotion zum Dr. jur. wechselte Thomas Petri im Sommer 2000 zur Aufsichtsbehörde Schleswig-Holstein. Dort war er als Referatsleiter für die Überwachung des Privatsektors zuständig. Von 2004 bis 2006 war er an das Bundesverfassungsgericht abgeordnet, wo er als wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter im Ersten Senat tätig war. Danach übernahm er die Leitung der Rechtsabteilung beim Berliner Beauftragten für Datenschutz und Informationsfreiheit; gleichzeitig war er stellvertretender Beauftragter in dieser Abteilung. Seit dem 1. Juli 2009 ist Thomas Petri der Bayerische Landesbeauftragte für den Datenschutz. Der Landesbeauftragte wird vom Bayerischen Landtag auf Vorschlag der Bayerischen Staatsregierung gewählt. Er wird vom Präsidenten des Landtags ernannt. Die Amtszeit beträgt sechs Jahre; eine Wiederwahl ist möglich. Thomas Petri wurde am 10. Juni 2015 wiedergewählt.

Am 25. Juni 2021 wurde Prof. Dr. Thomas Petri vom Bundesrat für eine Amtszeit von fünf Jahren zum Stellvertreter des gemeinsamen Vertreters im Europäischen Datenschutzausschuss gewählt.

Seit dem 30. März 2016 ist er Honorarprofessor an der Hochschule für angewandte Wissenschaften in München. Thomas Petri ist Berater und wissenschaftlicher Mitherausgeber verschiedener juristischer Fachzeitschriften mit datenschutzrechtlichem Bezug.
