Sol Bermann (CIPP) is the university privacy officer and IT policy and compliance strategist. He provides thought leadership in shaping institutional policy and practices and participates in the national discourse on privacy, IT security, and policy issues of strategic concern to higher education. Sol works in close coordination with university IT governance committees and works broadly across the university, collaborates with colleagues at other institutions, participates in leadership positions on national associations such as EDUCAUSE, and sits on various advisory and policy committees. 

 

Prior to joining the University of Michigan, he was Director of Global Privacy for Walmart, where he provided subject matter expertise on privacy and data protection laws, regulations, and best practices; collaborated in developing corporate-wide awareness and training initiatives; and worked collaboratively across the Walmart enterprise on matters related to: uses of data, global data-flows, information security, emerging technology trends, and fraud and identity theft issues.

 

Before joining Walmart, Sol was the Chief Privacy Officer for the State of Ohio; the first ever specifically appointed state CPO.  In that role, led the development, coordination, publication and implementation of statewide privacy and security policies, standards, and procedures.  In addition, he worked with the state legislature on drafting of state data protection laws.  

 

Sol was formerly Associate Director of the Center for Interdisciplinary Law and Policy Studies at the Ohio State University’s Moritz College of Law.  He was also an adjunct faculty member of OSU's International Studies Program, teaching on issues related to law, policy and civil liberties.

 

He is a frequent author and presenter on privacy, data protection IT security, and IT policy. Sol was co-author of the first Information Privacy: Official Reference for the Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP), and co-founder of the The HP-IAPP Privacy Innovation Award.

 

Sol received his B.A. from Beloit College, an M.A. in Foreign Affairs from the University of Virginia, and his J.D. from the Ohio State University’s Moritz College of Law.
