Carol Umhoefer is a partner in DLA Piper's Intellectual Property & Technology group in the US and is a co-chair of the firm's EMEA data protection, privacy and security practice. Carol's practice focuses on European law and more particularly France, where she is admitted as an avocat (attorney at law) and practiced for over 20 years. Her experience encompasses information technology, e-commerce, commercial contracts and related regulatory compliance issues. 

 

Carol has particular expertise in the area of IT-related regulations, specifically data protection, electronic document retention and encryption issues.  She regularly leads multi-national data protection audit and compliance projects for clients, and counsels on a broad range of issues arising under data protection laws.  She has extensive experience advising on data protection issues in high-risk circumstances, such as in connection with criminal investigations, application of the French blocking statute and U.S. discovery procedures, as well as internal and government agency investigations.

 

She is cited as a notable practitioner in Chambers Europe, lauded for being "practical, succinct and straightforward". Clients also say: "She's creative, comes up with proposals on how to achieve objectives and can balance and manage the risks."  Carol was named Information Technology Lawyer of the Year by Best Lawyers France, 2015-16.

 

Prior to joining DLA Piper, Carol was Counsel at Hogan & Hartson. She received her J.D. from Harvard Law School and her undergraduate degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
