Cédric Burton is Of Counsel in the Brussels office of the law firm Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati, where he assists clients of all sizes with regard to privacy and data protection issues. He has developed substantial experience in advising companies on all facets of global and European privacy laws, including defining global and pan-European strategies for compliance, advising on complex data flow and international data transfer requirements (e.g., BCRs, Safe Harbor, Standard Contractual Clauses), implementing multifaceted global compliance programs, and preparing data breach response schemes.

His clients include industry leaders and start-ups of all sectors with focus on technology and online services. Cédric regularly advises on topics such as online profiling and behavioral advertising, big data, data analytics, cloud computing, social networking, Internet of Things, mobile apps and devices, and other new technologies. He also counsels clients on the review of the EU data protection legal framework and represents clients in their dealings with the European Commission, the Article 29 Working Party, and data protection authorities. He helps maintain the WSGR EU Data Protection Observatory.

Cédric has authored many articles relating to privacy and data protection law and speaks regularly on data protection topics. He has received recognition for his privacy expertise by Chambers Europe in 2012 and 2013 and The International Who's Who of Information Technology Lawyers in 2013. Earlier in his career, Cédric was an associate in the Brussels office of Hunton & Williams for several years and worked as a research fellow in privacy and data protection law at the Research Center on IT and Law (CRID) of the University of Namur (Belgium) and at the Center on Law and Information Policy (CLIP) at Fordham University (New York). Cédric is Belgian-qualified, CIPP/E and holds two LL.M. degrees, one in Intellectual Property and Information Technology Law from the Fordham University School of Law and one in IT Law and Management from the University of Namur.
