IAPP Global Privacy Summit Hosts Q&A with National Security Agency's new Civil Liberties and Privacy Officer Rebecca Richards
The annual IAPP conference will mark the first public appearance by the new NSA CLPO
Washington, DC – March 3, 2014 - The International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP) will host its annual Global Privacy Summit in Washington, DC on March 5-7, where privacy professionals will gather at the world’s largest privacy conference to listen to privacy experts and industry leaders discuss the evolving privacy landscape. The event will mark the first public appearance by the recently announced National Security Agency's new Civil Liberties and Privacy Officer (CLPO), Rebecca Richards, CIPP/US, CIPP/G.
In August 2013, U.S. President Barack Obama announced the NSA would create a new position to lead its ongoing and future civil liberties and privacy efforts. Richards, former senior director for privacy compliance at the Department of Homeland Security, was selected to fill the post and is tasked with building a team and determining how the NSA, civil liberties and privacy work together. She’ll be looking to share ideas, best practices and applied technologies with privacy professionals inside and outside of government all over the world.
Richards will be joined by Danny Weitzner, director, MIT CSAIL Decentralized Information Group and former deputy chief technology officer for Internet policy at the White House, for a question and answer session to discuss the newly created position. Specifically, exploring Richards’ role and responsibilities and how she plans to tackle the job. They will discuss how an organization like the NSA can communicate more effectively about how it protects civil liberties and what the future may hold for government access to data. The session will be Thursday, March 6 at 3:45 EST p.m. at the Washington Marriott Wardman Park.
“We are thrilled to have Rebecca Richards join the list of speakers at the IAPP Global Privacy Summit this year,” said Trevor Hughes, CIPP, president and CEO of the IAPP. “Our conferences continue to offer privacy professionals a venue to connect and debate the future of the privacy profession.”
