Greetings from Brussels!

Today I’d like to highlight the explosive growth of the IAPP and how we’re continuing to support that growth in Europe.

For some context, as you may have heard, the IAPP recently surpassed 50,000 members! And of those, more than 15,000 are here in Europe. All this growth is incredible to see — as a small aside, yesterday was my eight-year IAPP anniversary, and when I started we had approximately 8,800 members globally. It has been amazing to see the industry grow so much and a humbling experience being a part of this organization during this rapid trajectory.

Additionally, the IAPP has more than 15,000 certified members with more than 5,000 based here in Europe. In both cases, Europe makes up about a third of the IAPP membership and certified member base. In parallel, the IAPP recently moved over to Pearson VUE for testing. This change provides more locations and available times for test-takers.

Not only has our membership seen a dramatic rise, but the number of events offered in Europe has also increased. Our flagship conference, the Data Protection Congress in Brussels, has swelled to more than 2,000 attendees — using all the space Brussels has available to us in the center. As a side note, conferences tend to sell out quickly, so keep an eye out for when registration opens and register early — to be notified about events, sign up for the Buzz Weekly.

In 2018, we also added our first-ever dual-language event with the launch of DPI: Deutschland. That was quickly followed up with another successful dual-language event in Paris (DPI: France) in February 2019, and both events sold out. With the addition of these two events, we now have four regular conferences across Europe each year. We have also updated our French and German offerings with the help of some dedicated volunteers for in-person live and online trainings.

The IAPP continues to host GDPR Ready trainings in Europe; we’ve also expanded our network of Official Training Partners to bring IAPP trainings to more areas — if you need training, we have you covered!

In addition to more training and events, we’ve hosted more than twice the number of KnowledgeNet Chapter meetings so far this year as we did in 2018. This allows for more than 1,400 "seats" for IAPP members to join the local data privacy community. This has been exciting, as building, engaging and growing the local community of privacy pros is so important to continue to bring great content to the growing membership.

As the membership and offerings continue to grow, so has our office. We’ve gone from a team of three in Brussels to eight, so we can now better support you while in the same (or similar) time zone.

You may have seen the Europe office listed on various IAPP pages and communications, but in case you missed it, the office is available via email at europe@iapp.org or +32 (0)2 486 41 66.

This is just the beginning of the continued growth of the IAPP in Europe. We are excited for the next chapter, and as always, thankful for you, our amazing members, for helping to make it happen.

Kind regards,
Scott
