You know what's fun about having a Data Privacy Day that falls on the weekend? It means we have almost two weeks of privacy activities, with a handful before the big day and a few afterward. Heck, privacy has become a big enough issue, maybe we even need our own month.
I hope you have been able to partake in some of the celebrations events so far, including the learning and networking opportunities. I hope you also used the occasion to raise awareness about the importance of privacy and good practices within your organization. And if you haven't, you've got this coming week to make up for it.
I noticed the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada kicked off Data Privacy Week with the unveiling of its new multiyear strategic plan, which sheds light on where the OPC intends to focus its attention over the next few years. The office is also asking for stakeholder input on how to put the plan into action and there's an online form you can fill out to share your ideas. Privacy pros would be wise to take notice — especially those using AI and generative AI, and those engaging in privacy issues affecting children and young people.
I know these kinds of documents can seem, on the surface, like corporate check-box exercises, but I think they can be pretty enlightening and useful information in our line of work. Back in November 2023, the Commission d'accès à l'information du Québec released their strategic plan, which explained what they will be up to until 2027. Meanwhile, Ontario's Information and Privacy Commissioner's office has clearly been using its 2021-2025 strategic priorities as a guide and it's clear to see how their work all ties back.
Anyway, my point is that I'm not sure how much attention these strategic and operational plans get. I'm guessing it's usually a lot less than annual reports. To me, they can be quite revealing and useful, so I do hope you take the time to read them.
On that note, I also hope you have a few non-privacy related plans this weekend to enjoy. And I hope that if there's an IAPP KnowledgeNet near you next week — there are a bunch — that you register and join. For those going to the Ottawa event 31 Jan., I look forward to seeing you there!
