Facial recognition use amid Russian invasion of Ukraine raises privacy concerns

The New York Times reports on the use of biometric services in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Clearview AI is being used to verify the identity of Russian soldiers, including those who are deceased, and travelers in Ukraine. More than 200 accounts for users at five Ukrainian government agencies have been created, with more than 5,000 searches conducted. Critics, like Fight for the Future Deputy Director Evan Greer, raised concerns about expanding facial recognition technology use with little privacy oversight.
