Wired reports how the California Privacy Rights Act will regulate dark patterns. The law does not consider patterns as a valid form of user consent, defining them as "subverting or impairing user autonomy, decision-making, or choice, as further defined by regulation." The newly re-introduced Washington Privacy Act 2021 includes similar language on dark patterns. Stanford Law School Institute for Internet and Society Non-Resident Fellow Jennifer King said the recognition of dark patterns in regulations is "probably going to proliferate."
