An investigation by BuzzFeed News found more than 7,000 individuals from 1,803 law enforcement agencies across the U.S. have run Clearview AI facial recognition searches, often without public oversight. Agencies include “local and state police, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the Air Force, state (health care) organizations, offices of state attorneys general, and even public schools.” Leaders were often unaware employees were using the tool to search for individuals, including protestors, Capitol insurrectionists, and friends and family members.
