The U.S. military is developing lethal drones implanted with facial recognition technology, Newsweek reports after a contract between the Department of Defense and a Seattle-based software company was first obtained by NewScientist Magazine. The military’s USD800,000 contract with RealNetworks will see the production of autonomous drones using machine learning to identify potential targets of U.S. special operations forces. Critics said the use of facial recognition is still experimental technology and poses ethical concerns if it was used as part of a lethal weapons system, in large part due to studies finding FRT regularly misidentifies nonwhite people.
