U.S. Reps. Ted Lieu, D-Calif., and Nancy Mace, R-S.C., reintroduced the Ensuring National Constitutional Rights for Your Private Telecommunications Act, which proposes a national standard for encryption. The bill preempts state and local encryption laws, allowing for interstate collaboration on policy and technical issues. Lieu said strong encryption is "vital to protecting our nation’s security and Americans’ privacy," while Mace indicated the law is needed given "businesses are being pushed by law enforcement to intentionally weaken their security … putting millions of Americans’ personal information at risk."
