The U.S. Internal Revenue Service still relies on facial recognition vendor ID.me to verify taxpayers’ identities despite announcing it would end the partnership with the company, CyberScoop reports. With no alternative verification vendor or an in-person option, it is an indication the federal government is experiencing a “slow rollout of Login.gov.” ID.me’s Chief Experience Officer David Kensick said 85-90% of taxpayers opted for the company’s matching technology, and found more than 70% of verifications were successful, even though skeptics of facial recognition cite studies that find algorithms are 100 times more likely to misidentify people of color.
