In an interview with the French data protection authority's digital innovation lab, the Laboratoire d'Innovation Numérique de la CNIL, independent security researcher Ashkan Soltani discussed the development of the Global Privacy Control. Soltani said the initiative aims to "allow internet users to automatically communicate their privacy preferences to businesses they interact with." Soltani also discussed how GPC differs from a "Do Not Track" mechanism, its potential uptake in the U.S. and EU, and if it could potentially extend to consent for cookies or another user tracking.
