San Francisco police have utilized self-driving cars for surveillance purposes, Vice reports. The publication obtained a police department training document through a records request. It detailed how officers should interact with autonomous vehicles. A section titled “Investigations” informs officers that AVs could be useful in collecting video footage. The AV manufacturers listed in the document, Alphabet’s Waymo and General Motors’ Cruise, claimed through spokespeople they only provided law enforcement with video footage when presented with a warrant.
