In remarks at the 2023 Consumer Data Industry Association Law and Industry Conference, U.S. Federal Trade Commission Bureau of Consumer Protection Director Samuel Levine discussed today's "surveillance economy" and "failure of notice and choice." Levine said companies must assess what consumer data they collect, review the third parties they share data with, be transparent with consumers about data practices, and "employ robust data security practices and procedures." Meanwhile, the FTC joined the U.S. Federal Communications Commission in signing a renewed memorandum of understanding to combat unsolicited communications.
