Vice reports Google’s new dermatology application is based on data that underrepresents people with darker skin tones. According to a study published by Google, 3.5% of skin conditions pictured came from patients with brown, dark brown or black skin. Google said it took measures while building the app to “make sure we’re building for everyone.” AI for the People Founder Mutale Nkonde said, “The low representation of Black people within this [dermatology app] dataset suggests it is optimized for white consumers.”
