The Boston City Council passed a law requiring all surveillance technology funds, acquisitions or use to be approved by the council, including any new or updated use by law enforcement, The Boston Globe reports. Michelle Wu, sponsor of the bill and mayoral candidate, said, “We need clear safeguards in place to ensure that the surveillance technologies used by the City are deployed with transparency, public accountability, and democratic oversight." Additionally, the ordinance only allows school safety specialists to collect or share information of Boston students in events of criminal behavior.
