Welcome to the Digest.

This week, I was particularly drawn to the article “Legal risks for the DPO.” It makes some stark observations about potential personal liability of data protection/privacy officers, including under privacy laws in our region (Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia and The Philippines). For anyone thinking about taking up a DPO role, it’s worth doing your homework and reading articles such as this one.

But the big news of the week for readers in Australia and New Zealand is that the program has been released for this year’s iappANZ 2017 Summit (“Privacy & Personalisation: Walking the Line”) — to be held in Sydney Tuesday 3 Oct., followed by workshops Wednesday 4 Oct. There are so many interesting speakers on the program (including the privacy commissioners from both New Zealand and Australia), but I am particularly looking forward to hearing Eduardo Ustaran, CIPP/E, from Hogan Lovells talk about how he thinks the EU General Data Protection Regulation will impact businesses in this part of the world. I know what I think — but I want to know what Eduardo thinks. He has a terrific reputation as a privacy thought leader. Also, I always enjoy reading what Annabel Fordham and Anna Johnson write about privacy — so it will be great to hear them speak! Full program and registration details are right here — hope to see lots of you there!
