The Senate version of the bill passed in the House by an 89-9 vote, while the House iteration awaits a final vote in the Senate. Microsoft Senior Director of Public Policy Ryan Harkins said the Virginia legislation is comparable to the EU General Data Protection Regulation and the California Consumer Privacy Act. Speaking on behalf of the Virginia Trial Lawyers Association, attorney Mark Dix opposed the bill, saying it would "close the courthouse doors."
