U.S. Sens. Jon Ossoff, D-Ga., and Bill Cassidy, R-La., introduced the Data Elimination and Limiting Extensive Tracking and Exchange Act to regulate the data broker industry. The bill provides for a "one-time data deletion request" tool managed by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission that would purge data from registered brokers. It also establishes a "do not track list" prohibiting future collection. Rep. Lori Trahan, D-Mass., introduced companion legislation to the House of Representatives. Editor's note: The IAPP's Joe Duball recapped a U.S. Senate hearing regarding data brokers in December 2020.
