The Washington Post reports on the U.S. Department of Commerce's Investigations and Threat Management Service, which evolved into a counterintelligence group with its surveillance and information collection. Former Deputy Assistant Secretary of Intelligence John Costello said ITMS "has been allowed to operate far outside the bounds of federal law enforcement norms" and that its work and practices "rests on questionable legal authority." The unit was suspended by the Biden administration May 13 following an ongoing review of its activities.
