An amendment included in the U.S. Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act of 2021 addresses the exploitation of private images. Introduced by Reps. John Katko, R-N.Y., and Jackie Speier, D-Calif., the Stopping Harmful Image Exploitation and Limiting Distribution Act of 2021 would give the Department of Justice tools to address such privacy violations and establish federal criminal liability for those who share private images without consent. “This important legislation ensures our nation’s privacy laws are keeping pace with modern demands for online safety,” Katko said.
