Several residents of Marco Island, Fla., sued the city in U.S. federal court, and claimed the city’s police use of automated license plate recognition systems violates their privacy, Courthouse News Service reports. The automated recognition systems photographed and logged the date and time of every driver who drove into Marco Island. The New Civil Liberties Alliance claimed the police department unnecessarily keeps the records for up to three years. Police argued the recognition systems create a powerful disincentive against crime.
