The Markup Investigative Reporter Aaron Sankin writes about his experience using the AdChoices tool to opt out of personalized ads, saying it “leaves a lot to be desired.” Using Chrome, Sankin turned off third-party browser extensions that blocked tracking requests and digital ads, and six months later attempted to opt out of data collection through AdChoices. Thirty-eight companies processed his request, while 91 experienced a “temporary technical issue.” Repeating the request six times, Sankin was still unable to opt out of ads for four companies.
