In an op-ed for The New York Times, University of Pennsylvania Professor Joseph Turow expresses concerns over businesses using biometric technology like a person’s voice to "create value.” While advances in natural language processing and machine learning sound “incredibly cool,” Turow said, “these technologies are also worrisome because we engage a slippery slope whenever we start allowing the sounds of our voice and the syntax of our words to personalize ads and offers based on profit motives.” Editor’s note: IAPP Editorial Director Jedidiah Bracy, CIPP, spoke with Turow about potential privacy issues with the rise of the “voice intelligence industry.”
