In the past year, Meta banned at least seven companies engaged in “surveillance-for-hire activities” from Facebook, CyberScoop reports. Meta Head of Security Policy Nathaniel Gleicher said democracies of the world need to craft legislation to criminalize companies for making commercial surveillance software. Meta issued 13 recommendations for regulating surveillance-for-hire, which included “banning the sale of surveillance software, establishing institutions to help victims seek legal recourse and using export control lists to limit the availability of surveillance technologies.”
