The Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court ruled social media users have certain privacy rights, particularly Snapchat users given that postings disappear within 24 hours, the Dorchester Reporter reports. The decision is the result of a case questioning police use of a Snapchat “story” from a private account as evidence in an arrest after the defendant unknowingly accepted a friend request from a police officer. The court likened Snapchat to a “letter written in disappearing ink” and said the defendant “had a reasonable expectation of privacy.”
