Bloomberg’s CityLab reports some law enforcement agencies are recommending homeowners install license plate reader cameras for neighborhood safety surveillance, particularly technology from startup Flock Safety. The data Flock license plate readers collect is then shared with law enforcement. Electronic Frontier Foundation Policy Analyst Matthew Guariglia said in exchange for help in marketing the product to consumers, Flock offers police “more surveillance that you would not have access to otherwise.” Privacy and civil liberties advocates say placing surveillance in citizens’ hands raises concerns.
