The U.S. House Committee on Energy and Commerce published a blog post touting the benefits a national data privacy standard, such as the proposed American Privacy Rights Act, could bring for small businesses. The post stated, without a national comprehensive privacy law, small- and medium-sized entities may pay more than USD20-23 billion attempting to comply with the growing state privacy law "patchwork." Meanwhile, the National Retail Federation issued a statement opposing the APRA and warned SMEs could be subject to "fly-by" lawsuits under a proposed private right of action.
